O estudo de caso da Serra de Monchique baseado na memória do uso e controlo do fogo a partir de fontes orais e documentais foi apresentado por Joana Sousa no 8º Encontro Nacional de Economia Política que, em 2025, se subordinou ao tema “Economia Política para uma Vida Justa: Desafios Teóricos e Práticos”. Joana participou no painel “The Political Ecology of Forest Fires”, organizado por Jonas Van Vossole (Centro de Estudos Sociais, Univ de Coimbra), com uma comunicação intitulada “The Anti-Fire Paradox: Memories of Little Fires Everywhere and the Imposition of a Wildfire Economy in Serra de Monchique, Portugal”. A comunicação desenvolveu uma perspetiva social que percorre a memória dos usos e significados do fogo, dos incêndios e do seu controlo, no contexto das transformações agroflorestais do século XX. O painel contou também com as intervenções de Maria Carolina Varela (INIA), Amedeo Policante (IHC – NOVA FCSH) e Jonas Van Vossole (CES – UC). A sessão aconteceu em regime presencial e realizou-se na Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra. Este encontro anual é organizado pela Associação Portuguesa de Economia Política.
Joana Sousa presented the memory of fire use and fire control in Serra de Monchique based on oral and documentary sources at the 8th National Meeting of Political Economy, which in 2025 was under the theme “Political Economy for a Just Life: Theoretical and Practical Challenges”. Joana participated in the panel ‘The Political Ecology of Forest Fires’ organized by Jonas Van Vossole (Center for Social Studies, Univ of Coimbra) with a paper entitled ‘The Anti-Fire Paradox: Memories of Little Fires Everywhere and the Imposition of a Wildfire Economy in Serra de Monchique, Portugal’. The communication was centered on a social perspective that permeates the memory of the uses and meanings of fire, and fire control, in the context of the agroforestry transformations of the 20th century. The panel also featured speeches by Maria Carolina Varela (INIA), Amedeo Policante (IHC – NOVA FCSH) and Jonas Van Vossole (CES – UC). The session took place in person and was held at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra. This annual meeting is organized by the Portuguese Association of Political Economy.
