No própria dia da conferência de encerramento do projeto FIREUSES, a revista VISÃO fez chegar às bancas um extenso artigo sobre a história dos grandes dos incêndios em Portugal, construído a partir dos resultados publicados e entrevista com dois investigadores do projeto. De acordo com a reflexão do jornalista Luís Ribeiro os incêndios catastróficos em Portugal têm raízes estruturais no Estado Novo, cujas políticas florestais dos anos 40/60 privilegiaram monoculturas como o pinhal e, posteriormente, o eucaliptal, ignorando usos e saberes populares. A conversão de áreas agrícolas e o abandono rural intensificaram o risco, resultando em tragédias recorrentes, como os incêndios de 2017.
On the day of the closing conference of the FIREUSES project, VISÃO magazine published an extensive article on the history of major fires in Portugal, based on the published results and an interview with two researchers from the project. According to journalist Luís Ribeiro, catastrophic fires in Portugal have structural roots in the Estado Novo, whose forestry policies in the 1940s and 1960s favoured monocultures such as pine and, later, eucalyptus, ignoring popular uses and knowledge. The conversion of agricultural areas and rural abandonment intensified the risk, resulting in recurring tragedies, such as the fires of 2017.
