Nos dias 19 e 20 de dezembro de 2024, decorreu o seminário de investigação “Materialidades da Violência, História e Historiografia”, 3º seminário anual organizado pelo Joint International Workshop “Decolonial Histories of Knowledge, Technology, and Environment”, que junta, desde 2022, investigadores do Instituto de História Contemporânea, da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, e do Departamento de História da Drexel University. Realizado na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, o encontro de dois dias, centrou-se na discussão de textos de 12 investigadoras e investigadores, previamente desafiados a pensar a história e a historiografia da violência no cruzamento das práticas da história do conhecimento, da história ambiental e da história social. Deste seminário e do trabalho continuado ao longo de 2025, resultará um livro editado em Portugal. Miguel Carmo, co-organizador do seminário, participou com uma proposta de texto, intitulado “Grande Sertão: Monchique. As paisagens de fogo das serras do sul e os seus inimigos modernos”, que resulta da pesquisa que vem desenvolvendo nas serras do Algarve no âmbito do projeto FIREUSES.
Outros três investigadores da equipa FIREUSES apresentaram igualmente textos para discussão, desenvolvidos a partir de outros projetos em que estão envolvidos. José Miguel Ferreira apresentou a proposta “Ocupar e cultivar: Os comandos militares como tecnologia de governo colonial”, Frederico Ágoas, o texto “Ciência, confissão e a ‘polícia das famílias’: O inquérito sociológico na afirmação do serviço social”, e Inês Gomes, a proposta “Entre a lã e o frio: O ideal e o concreto na casa portuguesa”.
On 19 and 20 December 2024, the research seminar ‘Materialities of Violence, History and Historiography’ took place, the 3rd annual seminar organised by the Joint International Workshop ‘Decolonial Histories of Knowledge, Technology, and Environment’, which since 2022 has brought together researchers from the Institute of Contemporary History at NOVA University Lisbon and the Department of History at Drexel University. Held at the National Library of Portugal, the two-day meeting centred on the discussion of texts by 12 researchers who had previously been challenged to work on the history and historiography of violence at the intersection of the practices of the history of knowledge, environmental history and social history. This seminar and continued work throughout 2025 will result in a book published in Portugal. Miguel Carmo, co-organiser of the seminar, participated with a proposal for a text entitled ‘Great Backlands: Monchique. The burning landscapes of the southern mountains and their modern enemies’, which is the result of the research he has been carrying out in the Algarve mountains as part of the FIREUSES project.
Three other researchers from the FIREUSES team also presented texts for discussion, developed from other projects in which they are involved. José Miguel Ferreira presented the proposal ‘Occupy and cultivate: Military commands as a technology of colonial government‘, Frederico Ágoas, the text ‘Science, confession and the “family police”: Sociological enquiry in the affirmation of social service’, and Inês Gomes, the proposal ‘Between wool and cold: The ideal and the concrete in the Portuguese home’.
