Em 1966, o historiador francês Albert Silbert publicou a sua tese de doutoramento “Le Portugal Meditérranéen à la fin de l'Ancien Régime”, defendida dois anos antes na Universidade de Sorbonne. Resultado de duas décadas de investigação, a sua tese reconstitui a economia rural das regiões meridionais da Beira Baixa e do Alentejo na viragem do século XVIII para o século XIX. Discípulo da escola dos Annales, Silbert descreveu um complexo mosaico sócio-ecológico de campos cultivados, charnecas, baldios, matas e pastagens. Le Portugal Meditérranéen tornou-se um marco na história rural e económica de Portugal, influenciando gerações de estudiosos. No entanto, um aspeto desta obra tem sido curiosamente esquecido: o papel do fogo como elemento crucial da paisagem rural. Neste breve artigo, publicado na Arcadia: Explorations in Environmental History, discute-se a importância do fogo na economia rural portuguesa e o papel inédito de Silbert na sua compreensão histórica numa altura em que estas práticas estavam a ser eliminadas da paisagem.
In 1966, the French historian Albert Silbert published his doctoral thesis ‘Le Portugal Meditérranéen à la fin de l’Ancien Régime’, defended two years earlier at Sorbonne University. The result of two decades of research, his thesis carefully reconstructed the rural economy of the southern regions of Beira Baixa and Alentejo at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. A disciple of the Annales school, Silbert described a complex socio-ecological mosaic of cultivated fields, moors (charnecas), common lands (baldios), woodlands (matas) and pastures. Le Portugal Meditérranéen became a landmark in the rural and economic history of Portugal, influencing generations of scholars. One aspect of this work, however, has been curiously overlooked: the role of fire as a crucial element of the rural landscape. This short paper, published in Arcadia: Explorations in Environmental History, discusses the importance of fire in the Portuguese rural economy and Silbert's unprecedented role in understanding it at a time when these practices were being erased from the landscape.
