O projeto FIREUSES participou na Conferência “Contemporânea, por onde andas?”, organizada pelo Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC), nos dias 4 e 5 de junho de 2025, destinada a pensar os limites cronológicos e reavaliar os objetos e as escalas de análise da História Contemporânea, a partir da investigação desenvolvida nesta unidade de investigação. Os resultados do projeto confirmam que os incêndios não são eventos pontuais ou meras catástrofes naturais: são processos históricos, enraizados em transformações estruturais que atravessam séculos e articulam passado, presente e futuro. Concluiu-se que os grandes incêndios contemporâneos só se tornam legíveis numa genealogia longa, que liga o Portugal pré-industrial, o Estado Novo, a integração europeia e as dinâmicas globais recentes. Numa continuidade entre história ambiental e história política, as políticas florestais, agrícolas e de ordenamento do território, bem como a ausência ou falência de algumas delas, moldaram as condições materiais e sociais para a propagação dos incêndios que assistimos na atualidade.
The FIREUSES project participated at the conference “Contemporânea, por onde andas?”, organised by the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC), on June 4 and 5, 2025. The objective of the conference was to reflect on the chronological boundaries and reassess the objects and scales of analysis of Modern History, based on the research developed in this research unit. FIREUSES results confirmed the assumption wildfires should not be regarded as isolated events or mere natural disasters; rather, they should be regarded as historical processes, rooted in structural transformations that span centuries and articulate past, present and future. It was concluded that the large contemporary wildfires only become legible within a long genealogy, linking pre-industrial Portugal, the Estado Novo, European integration and recent global dynamics. In a continuum between environmental history and political history, policies pertaining to forestry, agriculture and land-use planning, and the absence or failure of some of them, have shaped the material and cultural conditions for the current spread of the fires being witnessed today.
