Scope and content

This collection is formed by episcopal documents from the end of the 16th century to today. The documents prior to the Council of Trento were written by notaries, and, for this reason, the major part of them is held in the State Archive of Ferrara. After the Council of Trent, the diocesan archives were structured, and the new arrangement of the episcopal documentation aimed to reflect the authority of the bishop.
A folder of this collection (busca circa Hebreos, posizione 23) contains a register ("Anagrafe del ghetto di Ferrara") dating from February 1630, which is the oldest register of this type regarding the ghetto of Ferrara. Ioly Zorattini (2012) published this document.

Archival history

This fonds is part of the original collection of the archepiscopal archive of Ferrara. Initially, the fonds contained documentation dating back to the 9th century, but fires and thefts resulted in the loss of numerous documents and, at present, the oldest items date from the late 16th century. In the 20th century, a new archival fonds was organised. At present, the fonds has been subjected to further reworking and removals.
We would like to thank Riccardo Piffanelli, the archivist of the Archivio storico diocesano di Ferrara, for the information provided about this fonds.

Administrative / Biographical history

The first mention of an archive of the Ferrara church dates back to 955 when Bishop Martino claims to have developed research "in Arcivo Sancte nostre Ferrariensis ecclesie" (in the archive of the Holy Church of Ferrara). In the 14th and 15th centuries, some interventions were made regarding the notary records of the Curia. Some post-Tridentine synods, particularly on the initiative of the bishops Giovanni Fontana (bishop: 1590–1611) and Giovanni Battista Leni (bishop: 1611-27), gave precise indications about the conservation of parish, baptism, and marriage records in particular. In 1631, the archive was reorganised.
At present, the Archivio storico diocesano comprises the Archivio della Curia Arcivescovile (Archiepiscopal Curial archives), the Archivio della Mensa Arcivescovile (Archiepiscopal Board archives), the Archivio dei residui ecclesiastici (Ecclesiastical records archives, including 136 archival fonds) and several other minor fonds.
