Scope and content

The Pergaminhos collection mainly contains documents relating to the sale and purchase of estates on the outskirts of Almada (near Lisbon) in the 15th and 16th centuries. However, it also includes the only known surviving document from the “vereação” (council) of the Jewish “comuna” (commune) of Lisbon (PT/AHALM/CPERG/000004). Dated from October 11, 1485, it reports a meeting of the “Câmara da Vereação” (council) of the "comuna" (commune) of Lisbon one week before, with the presence of the "arrabis" (commune leaders) Mousem Fayam and Jaco Galite and the “vereadores” (councilmen) Abraão Rico Homem, Mousem Navarro, and Mousem Albateine, among others named in the document. In this meeting, Josepe ben Yaex, a tailor, and José Calado were authorised to sell a house in the Judiaria Nova (the new Jewish quarter) of Lisbon to Juda Gabay, a merchant, and José Catalão, a tailor. A digital copy of this document is available online at https://www.m-almada.pt/arquivohistorico/viewer?id=112&FileID=40. The document was transcribed by José Augusto da Cunha Freitas de Oliveira (2006 and 2008).

Archival history
-
Apart from a document of 1831 donated to the Arquivo Histórico de Almada by Romeu Correia (1917-96), a Portuguese writer and playwright, all parchments of this collection, from the 15th and 16th centuries, were purchased by the archive from the old bookstore Livraria Alfarrabistas in Lisbon (Rua do Alecrim, 44) in 1976 for 6,000 escudos (currency). The purchase was approved by the City Council of Almada in a meeting on June 25, 1976, following a report by the Portuguese historian Joaquim Barradas de Carvalho (1920-80), who had previously analysed and evaluated the ten parchments, considering them of great interest.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The original archive of the Municipality of Almada gathered all the documentation produced by the City Council, which was stored in an ark that was known as the "arca do concelho" (city ark) or "arca das escrituras" (deeds ark). The Great Earthquake of 1755 caused the loss of almost all documentation dating from before the 17th century. After the earthquake, the Paços do Concelho (Council Chambers) were restored, and the archive remained there until the Estado Novo (dictatorship period, from 1933 to 1974). After 1977, the oldest collections of the Municipality of Almada were catalogued and stored in a room of the Casa Pargana, where the Municipal Library was located. In 1997, when the library was transferred to a new building, the Arquivo Histórico de Almada improved its conditions of preservation and accessibility of its collections.
