Scope and content

The Brandão Pereira fonds is essentially composed of medieval documentation related to the transaction of properties, namely sales, purchases, "aforamentos", "emprazamentos" (emphyteusis contracts), etc. Two parchments from this collection have references to Jews dwelling in Porto in the 15th century:
PERG-627(C242): Sale of a half of a house in the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) by Abraão Benjamin, o Velho (the elder), a goldsmith, and Isaac Odara, o Velho, a “jubeteiro” (hawker), on behalf of the Abraão Bitom, s goldsmith, and his wife Cinfana, who lived in Tui (Spain), to Samuel de Vitória, also a Jewish goldsmith, for 7,000 reais brancos (currency). The house was near the Monastery of São Domingos. According to the deeds, a part of this amount should be delivered to Salomão Belfurado, to pay a debt that Abraão Bitom owed him. Porto, July 16, 1445.
PERG-629(C243): A three-live “emprazamento” of a house in the "judiaria" to a Jewish tailor named Samuel Saalom and his wife Dona for 20 pounds and a half per year. Porto, April 3, 1467.
Digital copies of both documents are available on the archive website.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The Brandão Pereira was a family from the Paço de Coreixas (Penafiel) that settled in Porto in the second half of the 15th century. They became part of the city's urban social elite and gave rise to a great line of royal officials, nobles and men of culture. João Brandão was treasurer of the Casa da Moeda (Mint) and was appointed “contador da Fazenda” (accountant of the treasury) of the city of Porto as a reward for his support to the king during the Battle of Alfarrobeira (a dispute between King Afonso V and D. Pedro, Duke of Coimbra in 1449). The position of "contador" was inherited by his son Diogo Brandão, who also distinguished himself as a poet, being one of the most important authors of the Cancioneiro Geral (anthology of Portuguese poetry organised by Garcia de Resende and published in 1516).
