Scope and content

The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora fonds comprises documentation related to this brotherhood, arranged in nine sections: Constituição e Regulamentação (Foundation and By-laws); Gestão Administrativa (Administrative Management); Gestão Financeira (Financial Management); Gestão Patrimonial (Asset Management); Recursos Humanos (Human Resources); Gestão da Informação e Documentação (Document and Information Management); Assistência Médica e Social (Social and Medical Assistance); Igreja (Church); and Justiça (Justice). The Gestão Patrimonial section is organised in four series: Escrituras (Deeds); Inventários e Tombos (Inventories and Registers); Legados Pios (Pious Legacies); and Sentenças (Sentences).
Both the Escrituras and the Tombos series contain information concerning the Jewish community of Évora before the late-15th century expulsion of the Jews from Portugal.
The Escrituras series (129 storage units; 1331/1902) contains documents related to property deeds belonging to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora, namely deeds of leasing, "aforamento", "emprazamento" (emphyteusis contracts), purchase, and sale dating back to the 14th century. It also includes a group of parchments belonging to former hospitals and "albergarias" (hostels) in Évora. It is the case of a group of parchments related to the Casa de S. Lázaro (hospital), dated from 1440 to 1548 (PT/ADEVR/MIS/SCMEVR/D/001/0005), which mention Jewish owners of houses situated in Rua do Tinhoso, where the Jewish quarter was located (e.g. fols. 37v-38). Another group of parchments with deeds from the former hospitals of Santo Espírito, Corpo de Deus, S. Bartolomeu and S. Gião (PT/ADEVR/MIS/SCMEVR/D/001/0001) also has references to Jews dwelling in Évora before the expulsion. For instance, a document reports that a Jewish widow renounced in December of 1458 to the "emprazamento" of a house in the Jewish quarter, which was adjacent to the hospital of S. Gião (fol. 48). Another record mentions a dispute between two Jewish physicians of Évora whose case was presented before the rabbi Gedaliah Negro in Lisbon at the end of 1477 (fol. 47-48). See Tavim and Mucznik, 2018. Digital copies of both books are available online.
The Tombos subseries (12 storage units; 1499/1868) includes the so-called “Livro do Acenheiro” (PT/ADEVR/MIS/SCMEVR/D/002-002/0003), a codex dated from 1537, with the records of deeds and properties belonging to the Hospital do Espírito Santo in Évora. There are some mentions of estates previously owned by Jews among these records. Some extracts of this book were published by Pereira (1885).

Archival history

The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora fonds was originally deposited in its Arquivo Histórico (Historical Archive). However, to ensure its preservation and make it more easily available for public consultation, it was decided, in 1943, that the documentary fonds would be transferred to the Biblioteca Pública de Évora (Évora Public Library). Shortly after, it was relocated to the Arquivo Distrital de Évora (Évora District Archive). This archive had been instituted by decree on November 29, 1916, with the aim of incorporating documentation related to the Évora bishopric and district that had been provisorily gathered in the Biblioteca Pública de Évora.
Although the fonds is under the District Archive's custody, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora keeps its ownership, and the consultation of its documents requires the written permission of the Provedor.

Administrative / Biographical history

The brotherhood of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Évora was officially founded on December 7, 1499. It included King Manuel (who was its first Provedor) and Queen Leonor, the founder of the original Santa Casa da Misericórdia, among its original brothers. It was initially headquartered in the Chapel of São Joãozinho, from where the brotherhood began to provide charity and assistance to the poor. In 1553, the Misericórdia was transferred to the Convent of São João da Providência, where the first stone of the future Church of the Misericórdia was blessed in October 1554. However, the construction of the building only started twenty years later. Meanwhile, the Misericórdia de Évora incorporated the hospitals of Espírito Santo and S. Lázaro in 1567, following the recommendation of the Cardinal D. Henrique, then the regent of the kingdom. In 1651, the Misericórdia de Évora composed a new Compromisso (by-laws), which reflected the transformations in the brotherhood since its creation. During the 18th century, the Igreja da Misericórdia was subject to successive embellishment works, with the gilding of altarpieces and the installation of the blue-and-white tile panels in 1714. The Misericórdia de Évora also ran one of the most important hospitals of the kingdom, the Hospital da Misericórdia, which is still in operation.
