Scope and content

The Coleção de Pergaminhos gathers the oldest documentation of the Arquivo Distrital de Bragança. The collection is composed of documents of several provenances, such as monasteries, city councils, the Crown, the Holy See, etc., and includes diverse typologies of documents, such as letters, licenses, deeds, sentences, etc. It also comprises some records related to Jewish communities in Bragança:
Doc. 015 P: King Afonso IV settles regulations on how the Jews should provide loans to the residents of Bragança and its outskirts. May 26, 1330.
Doc. 023 P: Notary João de Pedroso interrupted the Sabbath services in the Jewish "comuna" (commune) of Bragança to announce that the king had appointed him to become the clerk of the affairs between Jews and Christians. October 10, 1344.
140 documents of this collection were transcribed and published by Paula Pinto da Costa (2004).

Archival history

The collection was gathered according to the material of the documents (parchments) and includes documents from several provenances that had been incorporated in the Arquivo Distrital de Bragança over its history. In the first years of the present century, a project funded by the Programa Operacional de Cultura (Operational Program of Culture) promoted the digitalization, transcription, and description of part of the collection. The results were published in 2004 in CD-Rom.

Administrative / Biographical history

On November 29, 1916, President Bernardino Machado decreed the creation of the Biblioteca Pública (Public Library) and of the Arquivo Distrital (District Archive) of Bragança. The objective was to gather important collections of manuscripts and printing books that existed in Trás-os-Montes.
A new decree on May 22, 1965, merged the Public Library and the District Archive. However, the Museu Abade Baçal continued to hold archival collections until the 1980s. In 1985, the Public Library and District Archive opened to the public in the Convent of São Francisco. However, the library and archive had to be transferred to a building in the former Quinta da Trajinha, as the Convent had to undergo construction works. They remained there for 12 years. It was only in 1999 that the Arquivo Distrital returned to the renovated Convent of São Francisco.
