Scope and content
The Instituto de Paleografia e Diplomática collection gathers documents in parchment and paper of different typologies and provenances, part of them dated from the Medieval era. One of these documents records King Afonso V's confirmation, on 31 January 1443, of the donation of the Jewish synagogue of Monchique, in Porto, by King João I to Gil Vaz da Cunha, on 2 May 1410. The building was donated to Vaz da Cunha to build a house for his residence. The previous reference of this document was IPD, Pasta 1, doc. 9.
The Instituto de Paleografia e Diplomática also had a picture library comprising photocopies of documents owned by other institutions. Among them, there is a copy of the "Tombo de Celanova", whose original is part of the collection of the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid (ES.28079.AHN/3.1.4.3.58). It contains the oldest known reference to Jews in the Portuguese territory, namely a mention of the ownership of rural properties in Coimbra's outskirts in the 10th century. The Instituto's picture library also comprises a copy of the "Censual do Bispo de Coimbra", which also includes references to the Jewish community of Coimbra. Both copies are stored in boxes whose records are still untreated and non-catalogued.
We would like to thank Professor Luísa Trindade and Professor Saul Gomes for the information they gave us on this collection.

Archival history
The Instituto de Paleografia e Diplomática collection was originally composed of 25 parchments acquired in 1948 and 1949 by the former Instituto de Estudos Históricos of the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (Institute of Historical Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra), through its director, Professor Torquato de Sousa Soares. Later, another five parchments were donated to the institute. In 1991, Professor Isaías da Rosa Pereira donated 60 documents from his personal collection. In 2003, these documents were transcribed by Palaeography students of the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. At present, the Instituto de Paleografia e Diplomática's records are part of the collection of the Faculdade de Letras Library.
Administrative / Biographical history
The Instituto de Paleografia e Diplomática was separated from the Instituto de Estudos Históricos António de Vasconcelos in 1974, by the initiative of Professor Cónego Avelino Jesus da Costa, who directed it until 1978. The institute aimed to promote the training and research in Palaeography and Diplomatics and to provide students with original documents and copies.
