Scope and content

This fonds comprises documentation of several typologies related to the management of the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada. The oldest documents of this fonds are in the Gestão Patrimonial (Patrimonial Management) series, whose oldest record dates back to 1456. This series is constituted by documents related to the brotherhood's estates and assets management, including records of "aforamentos" (emphyteusis contracts), properties, pensions, etc. This series includes a legal instrument dated from July 30, 1482, in which one of the parts was Salomão Alegria, the rabbi of the Jewish "comuna" (commune) of Setúbal (PT/ADSTB/CON/CSASTB01/E/006/000150). It also contains a few late documents with mentions of the place where the former Jewish quarter was located (see PT/ADSTB/CON/CSASTB01/E/006/00301 and PT/ADSTB/CON/CSASTB01/E/006/00175).

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The Hospital e Confraria de Nossa Senhora da Anunciada (Nossa Senhora da Anunciada Hospital and Brotherhood) was founded around the 13th century and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada was built in Setúbal, which became its headquarters. The brotherhood had a hospital with two wards: one for women and the other for men. After the creation of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Setúbal in 1500, the hospital became dedicated to treating women exclusively. In 1553, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada became head of a parish.
In 1868, the Governo Civil (Civil Government) of Lisbon extinguished the brotherhood. An executive committee appointed by the Governo Civil managed the brotherhood since the previous year. In 1869, all its accounts were closed down and its assets delivered to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Setúbal.
