Scope and content

The Mosteiro de São Paulo de Almaziva fonds contains a cartulary with about one hundred records concerning properties the monastery had owned since its origins. This document, currently known as the "Cartulário de S. Paulo de Almaziva", was compiled in the 13th century but includes records dating back to 1121. It also contains three records added between the late 15th century and the early 16th century, after the conclusion of the cartulary. Composed by documents on donations, sale deeds, "aforamentos" (emphyteusis contracts) and exchanges of properties in locations such as Montemor and Granja de Alfarelos, the "Cartulário" reveals the constitution and evolution of the monastery's estates over time and provides information on the daily life of the community and the locations where the monastery had properties.
One of its earliest records of the "Cartulário", dated from December of 1219, reports the sale of an estate near Montemor-o-Novo by two Jews, Regina Judea and Salomão (identified as Almosarif's son), to a Christian named Fernando Peres. One of the witnesses of the contract is Jucefe de Leirena, a Jew from Leiria. (fl. 18, doc. 85)

Archival history

The name of the "Cartulário de São Paulo de Almaziva"'s compiler is unknown, but he probably was a monastery member, maybe a copyist monk with aesthetic purposes.
After the extinction of the Monastery of São Paulo de Almaziva in 1544, the "Cartulário" was incorporated in the College of São Bernardo of Coimbra's archive. In 1680, it was included in the volume XI of the "Cartório do Colégio de São Bernardo de Coimbra" (Registry of the College of São Bernardo of Coimbra). In 1834, following the dissolution of the monasteries in Portugal, the College of São Bernardo of Coimbra was extinct. Later, its archive (including the Monastery of São Paulo de Almaziva's records) was incorporated in the Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra (University of Coimbra Archive). However, in the same year of 1834, Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) took to the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo the Almaziva parchments, except the "Cartulário", which remains in the Arquivo da Universidade de Coimbra, probably because it was integrated in the volume XI of the "Cartório do Colégio de São Bernardo". The documents taken by Herculano constitute, at present, the Mosteiro de São Paulo de Almaziva fonds of the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, which is composed of 8 bundles. Among them, there are about 50 original documents that were copied in the "Cartulário".

Administrative / Biographical history

The Monastery of São Paulo de Almaziva belonged to the Cistercian Order. Its origins date back to the late 12th century, although some authors refer to its foundation in 1220 by Fernando Peres. The purchase of these lands and their donation to the monastery was confirmed in 1221 by King Afonso II and Pope Honorius III by the bull "Religiosam vitam eligentibus". In that same year, Dom Pedro Soares, the Bishop of Coimbra, permitted the Monastery of São Paulo to observe the Cistercian reform.
The monastery was extinguished in 1544. Its assets, incomes and archive were then delivered to the Colégio de São Bernardo de Coimbra (College of São Bernardo of Coimbra).
