Scope and content
The Família Saldanha e Castro e Falcão Trigoso fonds comprises documentation produced by or related to a group of Portuguese noble families interconnected by blood and marriage bonds. It includes records regarding the administration of properties and entailed states; offices and positions exercised by their members in Portugal and Portuguese overseas territories; as well as diverse documentation concerning families and individuals, such as birth and marriage certificates, genealogies, inventories of assets, judicial processes, sentences, wills, etc.
A group of documents identified as having been part of a notebook entitled "Casais de Abegoaria e dos Negrais", at present in maço (bundle) 4, caixa (box) 1, no. 11, contains references to rural properties bought and sold by Juda Galite, a Jewish merchant resident in the Judiaria Grande (Great Jewish quarter) of Lisbon.
On May 16, 1477, he bought an "abegoaria" (building to store cattle and farming equipment) in Sintra from a Christian couple also from Lisbon, João Martins Floreado and Inês Anes (doc. 1). Years later, on December 2, 1489, the Convent of Chelas renounced the share of an "abegoaria" that it had "emprazado" (leased by emphyteusis contract) to Galite and his wife Lediça (doc. 2). As the convent had no documents to prove the ownership of the share of the "abegoaria", it was given to Galite in exchange for the portion of another "abegoaria" and a plot of land in Alenquer. This exchange was confirmed four years later, on December 2, 1492 (doc. 3). On May 21, 1492, Galite and his wife sold an "abegoaria" in the outskirts of Sintra to Rui Mendes de Brito, a nobleman resident in Lisbon, and his wife Margarida Figueira (doc. 6). At the end of the same year, the monastery of Odivelas exchanged with Galite and his wife some houses and plots of land in Abegoaria and Negrais, in the outskirts of Sintra, for a "casal" (rural property) in Bemposta, in the parish of Bucelas, owned by the Jewish couple. The "casal" was composed of a group of houses, which included an oven, a dovecote with its doves, haystack houses and a stable, as well as several plots of land with vineyards, olive and fig trees, groves, as well as scrublands (docs. 4 and 5).
Another record of this fonds (maço 14, caixa 2, no. 40) contains information regarding Abraão Polegar, a Jewish merchant living in Sintra. On October 29, 1480, he and his wife acquired part of a rural property, the Casal do Condado, in the outskirts of Sintra, for 8,000 reais brancos (currency). Shortly after, on December 1, they sold that property to a Christian couple, Luís Eanes da Mata and Leonor Álvares Venderelhos, for 10,000 reais brancos. An abstract of these records concerning Polegar is in maço 2, no. 71 [fol. 5].
We would like to thank Pedro Pinto for the information regarding these records.

Archival history
The archive of the Saldanha Albuquerque e Castro Ribafria (Penamacor) Lima e Melo Falcão Trigoso family is the result of the aggregation of archives from noble families united through marriage. For instance, D. Teresa Maria de Saldanha e Castro, as the sister of the third Count of Penamacor, owned the Penamacor archive. In 1866, when she married Sebastião Francisco Falcão de Lima Van-Zeller Sanches de Baêna Henriques de Melo Trigoso, both archives were merged.
The archive entered the National Archive of Torre do Tombo in 2007 to be stored there for thirty years, as established by the contract made between the Torre do Tombo and the family delegate, D. Maria José Falcão Trigoso. A fonds dedicated to this documentation was then created named "Família Saldanha Albuquerque e Castro Ribafria / Lima e Melo Falcão Trigoso", as mentioned in the contract.
The archival treatment of this fonds began in 2013 in order to attend to requests for its consultation. The family was then consulted, via its delegate, and the name of the archive was settled as "Saldanha e Castro e Falcão Trigoso". In 2015, the name changed to "Família Saldanha e Castro e Falcão Trigoso".

Administrative / Biographical history
This fonds gathers documents from different prominent noble families, united as a result of marriages and convergences between them. Part of the documentation comes from the family of D. João de Castro (1500-1548), the forth Viceroy of India, since one of his daughters married the grandson of the first Count of Penamacor. Many members of these families were high officials in India, Angola and Mozambique, but also professors in the University of Coimbra, diplomats, scholars, high magistrates, members of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Lisbon Academy of Sciences), among others.
