Scope and content
-
The Condes de Resende fonds is part of the "Colecções em Organização" (Collections in Organisation) of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. It comprises records produced by or related to the Castro family, which was awarded the earldom of Resende in 1754. This fonds contains a significant number of 15th-century records. One of them refers to the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) of Abrantes in central Portugal. It is a deed (cx. 73, doc. 6) written in Coimbra and dated from November 7, 1480, that includes the copy of a power of attorney given by Rui Gomes da Silva, a nobleman, to Afonso Lopes, a squire, which was signed in the house of Jacob Cellam, a Jew, in the "judiaria" of Abrantes (October 25, 1480). According to the document, Rui Gomes da Silva was then staying at Cellam's house. Therefore, this document is an interesting example of interaction between Jews and Christians at a time of growing social and religious tensions that would end with the expulsion at the end of the century.
We thank Pedro Pinto for bringing this document to our attention.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
On June 9, 1754, King José I created the title of Count of Resende and granted it to D. António José de Castro (1719-1782). D. António José de Castro and his descendants were awarded the position of Almirante de Portugal (Admiral of Portugal), which, at the time, was only an honorary title. His son and second Count of Resende, D. José Luís de Castro (1744-1819), became the 13th viceroy of Brazil in 1790.

System of arrangement
-
The Condes de Resende fonds is part of the "Colecções em Organização", which gathers fonds and collections that were not the subject of a systematic organisation and, for this reason, their records are not searchable on the Biblioteca Nacional website. The fonds comprises six boxes: Cx. 73 (1386-1626); Cx. 74 (1547-1637); Cx. 75 (1600-1831); Cx. 76 (17th century-1903); Cx. 76A (16th century - 1870); Cx. 76B (1701-1867). Records are arranged chronologically.
