The Convento de São Domingos de Vila Real fonds contains records related to the acquisition, transaction, and management of this convent's estates. The oldest document, and only parchment of this fonds (PT/ADVRL/MON/CSDVR/F/006/008), dates back to February 28, 1480, and it reports an "emprazamento" (emphyteusis contract) of a stable near the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) of Vila Real. The stable belonged to a Christian widow named Maria Martins, who leased it to a Jewish couple, Samuel Abise and his wife Fremosa. In the document, the stable is located behind the judiaria and adjacent to Mose Baru's house, another member of the Jewish community of Vila Real. At present, this document is in poor condition of conservation.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The history of the Convento de São Domingos of Vila Real dates back to November 2, 1421, when King João I conceded the land to build the convent. The foundation stone was laid on May 8, 1424. However, the construction and occupation of the convent were delayed for years. Only about 1509, the building achieved the capacity for a dozen friars. Over the centuries, the convent benefited from the protection of the Crown, particularly King Afonso V, and the Marquises of Vila Real.
After the dissolution of the monasteries in Portugal in 1834, the convent's church was handed over to the Church of São Pedro's priest and, shortly later, in 1835, to the rector of the São Dinis parish. In 1837, a severe fire reached the building, which, at the time, served as headquarters of troops. Later, the church was restored and, after the establishment of the Diocese of Vila Real, in 1922, it became the cathedral church.
