Scope and content
The Atti dei notai del distretto di Padova is a fonds of the Archivi notarili (Notarial Archive) preserved at the Archivio di Stato di Padua. It gathers notarial records produced by notaries operating in the city of Padua and its district since 1303. The fonds is organised into 6 series: Protocoli (notarial deeds), 1303-1465 (424 vols.), 1400-1559 (1,580 vols.), 1500-1658 (3,283 vols.), 1600-1750 (2,725 vols.), 1700-1849 (2,996 vols.), 1800-1868 (479 vols.); Tabulari (tabular records), 1420-1489 (42 vols.); Indici delle parti contraenti (index of contractors), 18th-19th centuries (191 files); Repertori dei notai (lists of notaries), 1802-1868 (94 files); Testamenti segreti (Secret wills and testaments), 1674-1867 (2,008 docs. in 15 folders and 2 files); Atti notarili rogati da notai di curia (notarial deeds drawn up by notaries of the curia), 1338-1578 (9 vols. and folders).
This fonds contains unique information on the evolution and transformation of Padua and its population, including its religious minorities, such as the Jewish community. In this sense, the notarial records of Padua contain relevant sources for the study of the settlement of the Sephardic community in the city and its evolution and relations with local authorities. The information is dispersed but very important to trace the portrait of this community and its members, in particular their economic activities, properties and assets, and residence locations.

Archival history
The Archivio di Stato di Padova incorporated the notarial archives of the district of Padua a few years after its opening in 1948, in the sequence of the 1952 law that established that the notarial acts with more than 100 years should be transferred to the respective State Archives. In 1978, the Archivio di Stato was transferred to a building in via dei Colli.
Administrative / Biographical history
Although in rudimentary form, a notarial archive began to take form in 1420. Then, the city authorities established that all the minutes of dead or absent notaries resident in Padua should be collected and preserved in the Cancelleria comunale (municipal chancellery). In addition, the notarial deeds mentioned in the "Codice riformato" or "Codice veneto", such as wills, dowries, and sales, among others, had to be delivered to the Cancelleria to be transcribed in specific registers (the "tabularii").
In 1806, the new regulation on notaries established that a general notarial archive should be placed in each capital of department. Therefore, a notarial archive was established in Padua on November 1, 1807, to gather all notarial records preserved in the municipal chancelleries of Padua and in the territory under its jurisdiction.
