The Archivio notarile centrale di Sant’Angelo in Vado belongs to the series of notarial fonds deposited in the State Archives of Pesaro. This fonds preserves acts drawn up by the notaries of Sant’Angelo in Vado and Mercatello sul Metauro. These records contain valuable information for tracing the social and economic history of the Jewish community in this city and its outskirts. The Jewish minority was apparently mainly connected to lending activities. By the mid-17th century, this minority was probably already extinct in this region. Veronese (1998, and 2005) and Gasperoni (2012) have indicated numerous documents containing information for the reconstruction of the banking activities carried out by Jews between the 15th and 17th centuries. That is the case of a post-mortem inventory of Elia Guglielmi — preserved in the writings of the notary Scipione Lauri (1612-1615) — uncovering the activity of this family of bankers, as well as the credit and debt relationships that they were able to weave within that community and the Duchy of Urbino (Gasperoni, 2012, pp. 153-157).

Archival history
-
The notarial archive of Sant’Angelo in Vado is part of the complex of notarial fonds preserved in the State Archives of Pesaro. It is divided into two main series: the first includes protocols of the acts drawn up by about 100 notaries of Sant’Angelo in Vado, with repertoires and indexes (19th century) and archival copies (16th-19th centuries); the second preserves the protocols of the acts drawn up by about 43 notaries of Mercatello sul Metauro. Both series are accompanied by inventories, organised in a total of three volumes from the 19th to the 20th century. In 1989, Concettina Fazio compiled an inventory with brief descriptions of the documentation.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
As with many other places in the Marche region, the notary in Sant’Angelo in Vado developed from the Medieval period, in direct connection with the evolution of the municipal institutions that regulated its activity and created its statutes. In 1588, archives were established in Sant'Angelo and in other places in the Papal States. The acts drawn up by local notaries were, from then on, deposited and preserved in these archives. Despite the provisions of Pope Pius VII (papacy: 1800-1823) ordering the transfer of the Sant'Angelo notarial archive to the central archive of Urbania, the documentation remained in the municipal facilities during the 19th century. In 1858, the archive was qualified as a "central archive" and received documentation from the municipal archive of Mercatello. The Central Notarial Archive of Sant'Angelo in Vado was suppressed in 1966 and, over ten years later, in 1979, it was transferred to the State Archives of Pesaro. It was then catalogued and, in 1989, a summary inventory was produced. This inventory remains the main tool for researching this collection.
