Scope and content
This fonds comprises documentation from around 340 confraternities and brotherhoods from the 13th to the 19th centuries. The type of documentation concerning each fraternity is variable, but often contains series about financial activity, religious acts or celebrations, inventories, testaments, and records of internal proceedings and decisions.
The Scuole piccole e suffragi includes a sub-fonds concerning specifically the Jewish communities of Venice, entitled Fraterna della misericordia degli Ebrei tedeschi di Venezia ed altre fraterne degli Ebrei (Fraternity of mercy of the German Jews of Venice and other fraternities of the Jews). It contains nine series with records concerning the Fraternity of Mercy of the Jewish Ghetto, some of them in Hebrew (as an example, 729, fol. 10). There are also specific references to other Jewish fraternities, for instance, the Fraterna della Mizericorida della Nazione Israelita (Fraternity of Mercy of the Israelite Nation), in a document of August 16, 1812 (731, fol. 17v). The matters related to the daily life of the Jews of Venice are numerous, including references to the Università di Venezia (Jewish congregation of Venice), charities, loans and banks, among other topics (735).
All documents concerning the Jewish community are available online on:

Administrative / Biographical history
"Scuole" (confraternities) were brotherhoods of worshippers dedicated to acts of charity and piety. Their origins are not entirely known. They were instituted in a church through canonical erection, that granted them an official title, a juridic personality and official recognition. The members of each confraternity were obliged to participate in all sacred acts, wearing the habit and insignia of the brotherhood.
In Venice, most "scuole" were for lay people and were present in almost all territory since the 13th century. They were initially under the jurisdiction of the Consiglio di dieci (Council of ten), which, after February 26, 1360, gained the prerogative to authorise any new foundation. In 1507/8, they were placed under the control of the Provveditori di comun. In 1806/7, under the Napoleonic rule, all "scuole" were extinct with only a few exceptions.
