Scope and content

This collection comprises documentation from the German Chancellery in Copenhagen up to 1730. It includes eight files with relevant material to Jewish history. Each file deals with Jews in a specific town or region located in the former duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Most files comprise material on economic issues such as businesses run by Jewish citizens. The files also contain documents about the legal protection of Jewish citizens, particularly Jews of Portuguese origin living in the town of Glückstadt. Some files contain documents regarding privileges for Jewish citizens, e.g. specific trade rights, Jewish kosher butcheries, or religious rights.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Deutsche Kanzlei (German Chancellery) — also known as Schleswig-Holsteinische (since 1806) and Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburgische Chancellery (since 1816) — was gradually developed from the beginning of the 16th century. After 1660, it was organised as a college and existed until 1849. It was the central supreme authority for the administration of state administrative affairs in Schleswig, Holstein, Lauenburg (since 1816), and Oldenburg and Delmenhorst (from 1667 to 1773). The Deutsche Kanzlei was also responsible for foreign affairs until 1770.
