Scope and content

This collection is composed of about 20 fragments of Hebrew manuscripts that were found in bindings of some 16th-century codices from the manuscript fonds of the Biblioteca Civica "Gambalunga". Already published by Nello Pavoncello and registered by Mauro Perani, most of these fragments belong to a manuscript of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, and are written in Italian square script. The collection also includes fragments pertaining to a manuscript written in Sephardic script that may be dated to the 14th century, as follows:
Fragm. ebr. 15 and 16: Mišneh Torah, Mošeh ben Maimon, Eduyot, Teshuvah, Sanhedrin treatise, written in Sephardic semicursive script.

Archival history

The manuscript fonds of the Biblioteca Civica Gambalunga in Rimini includes about 1,400 manuscripts, of which 384 are incunabula. The original collection was created by the founder of the library, Alessandro Gambalunga (ca. 1554-1619). A large part of the 18th-century library of Cardinal Giuseppe Garampi (1725-1792), prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives from 1751 to 1772, was later incorporated into the collection. The remaining manuscripts were either offered as donations or acquired after the suppression of religious and secular schools, enforced during the Napoleonic period and following the birth of the Kingdom of Italy (1861).

Administrative / Biographical history

The Biblioteca Civica Gambalunga derives from the legacy of Alessandro Gambalunga (ca. 1554-1619), a jurist from Rimini who opened his palace and private library to the public. From an original nucleus of about 2,000 volumes, the library was able to grow over the following centuries by virtue of donations and confiscations of archives and libraries of extinguished convents and other religious organisations. At present, the library comprises about 300,000 volumes, including 1,350 codices and 384 incunabula. At present, the library is divided into five sections: Manoscritti (Manuscripts); Opere a stampa (Printed books); Fondi Speciali (Special fonds); Periodici (Periodics); Gabinetto dei disegni e delle stampe (Drawings and engravings room).
