The Chapter Archive of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna preserves documents produced by the administration of the Bolognese Chapter from the 10th to the 20th centuries. In addition to the series of correspondence, economic administration and accounting records, the archive also preserves originals and copies of papal bulls, briefs, news on the vacant seats of Bologna and on the chapter vicars, pastoral visits, documents relating to the Archiepiscopal Seminary, journals, and private fonds that have flowed into the archive.
Some volumes within the vast fonds of the Chapter of the Cathedral of Bologna were bound with parchments containing Hebrew manuscripts with Sephardic script, such as:
Registro dei conti Ghisilieri, a. 1575: fragment of a Hebrew Bible written in Sephardic square script.
Registro dei conti Ghisilieri, a.1580: fragment of the Book of Psalms written in Sephardic square script.
Registro dei conti Ghisilieri, a.1545: fragment of the Book of Job written in Sephardic square script.

Archival history
-
The first organisation of the collection, preserved in the Archiepiscopal General Archives of Bologna, was carried out between 1909 and 1913 by D. Augusto Macchiavelli. Recently, in 2010, the collection was reorganised by Mario Fanti. The documentation is divided into 60 distinct series, many of which consist of one or a few units. There are also four aggregate series: Manuscript choral books from the 14th century (13 units); Manuscript choral and liturgical books from the 17th-19th centuries (about 33 units); Printed choral and liturgical books from the 16th-20th centuries (320 units); and the Capitular heraldic collection from the 18th-20th centuries (16 paintings with coats of arms of dignities and canons).

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The first references to a Cathedral Chapter in Bologna date back to around 956. The Chapter already existed in that year, when its seat was moved to a new church dedicated to Saint Peter inside the city walls, which replaced the previous basilica located outside the walls. The documentation produced by the Cathedral Chapter follows the centuries-old historical events of the Bolognese church. At present, the Metropolitan Chapter is composed of an archdeacon canon, a penitentiary and chamberlain, a theologian, eight titular canons, and about 30 honorary canons.
