Archival history
This collection is the result of several donations, namely by Samuel Oppenheim in 1922, Mrs Clarence S. and Mr Edgar J. Nathan, Jr. (from the estates of various members of the Gomez, Isaacs, and Hendricks families) in 1929, and the Elsie O. and Philip D. Sang Foundation in 1979.
Administrative / Biographical history
The Gomez family were Sephardic Jews who settled in New York City in the early 1700s. The first member of this family who moved to British America was Lewis (Luís) Moses Gomez (1654-1740), a son of Isaac Gomez, a converso who left Madrid early in the 17th century and moved to Bordeaux. Lewis moved first from Bordeaux to London and later, in 1703, to New York. He was the father of a generation of prosperous merchants and remarkable members of the Congregation Shearith Israel: Mordecai Gomez, Daniel Gomez, Isaac Gomez and Benjamin Gomez.
