Scope and content

This collection comprises one volume of correspondence of the Boston merchant Henry Lloyd relating to his business ventures and trade in the West Indies and England, dating from 1765 to 1767. Lloyd maintained correspondence with the Portuguese Jewish merchant Aaron Lopez since the 1750s, that is to say, shortly after Lopez arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1752. Thus, this volume contains copies of several letters exchanged with Lopez and other Sephardic merchants, such as Lopez's father-in-law Jacob Rodriguez Rivera and Isaac da Costa from Charleston, South Carolina.

Archival history

This letter book was purchased by the Baker Library. Initially, it was incorporated into an artificial collection of records of Boston merchants engaged in foreign trade. The volume was removed from that collection in December 2020.

Administrative / Biographical history

Henry Lloyd (1709-1795) was a merchant in Boston who engaged in consignment sales and shipping ventures to Canada, the West Indies, England, and Europe. Lloyd marketed or traded such goods as whalebones, mahogany, lumber, fish, potash, and coffee. After the outbreak of the American Revolution, Henry Lloyd moved to Halifax in 1776. He eventually relocated to London, where he died in 1795.
