Scope and content

The Archief van de Familie Teixeira d'Andrade holds diverse documents concerning the Sephardic family Teixeira d'Andrade and related families, such as the Spinosa Castella, Mendes da Costa, Teixeira de Mattos, Jessurum de Mesquita and Salvador. It includes letters, wills, property records, and marriage and death certificates, among others. The fonds is divided into seven series. Most of the documentation is from the 19th and 20th centuries, but the first series includes documentation related to the 17th- and 18th-century generations of the Teixeira d'Andrade family. The contents are the following:
1: Deed of Citizenship of The Hague of Jean de Andradi (João de Andrade), 1699.
2: Will of David Teixeira d'Andrade, alias Francisco Teixeira, drawn up in 1707 and translated from French in 1708.
3: Transfer of a bond by Benjamin Teixeira to the executors of the will of the late Isaac Teixeira d'Andrade, 1732.
4: Transport of three bonds by Isaac Vaz Nuñez to the executor of the will of the late Rachel Teixeira Henriques, widow of David Teixeira d'Andrade, 1735.
5: Will of Rachel Teixeira drawn up in 1795 and translated from Dutch into English in 1797. It includes the confirmation by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1797.
6: Estate papers of Abraham Teixeira of which David Teixeira d'Andrade was executor, 1761-1812.
The Aanverwante families (Related families) series includes the will of Joseph Salvador in 1782 (149) and the confirmation of the will of Salomon de Meza Davidzn by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1790 (150). Joseph Salvador (1716–1786) was an influential businessman of London who was related to the Teixeira d'Andrade through the Lopes Suasso family. Digital copies of these two documents are available online.
In the Amsterdam City Archives, there are other collections related to the Teixeira family that should be consulted as well.

Archival history

The archive was deposited in the Amsterdam City Archives in 1980, by the daughter of Seline Teixeira d'Andrade and Bert Nienhuis.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Teixeira family was a Portuguese New Christian family that attained nobility and whose various branches - Teixeira d'Andrade, Teixeira de Sampayo, Teixeira de Mattos - extended to diverse destinations of the Western Sephardic Diaspora, such as Hamburg, London, Vienna, and Venice.
It was the case of Diogo Teixeira Sampayo, alias Abraham Senior Teixeira, who left Portugal for Antwerp in 1643. After a brief time in this city, he moved to Hamburg. In 1647 or 1648, Diogo and his wife adhered publicly to Judaism, and he and his two sons were circumcised. In Hamburg, Diogo succeeded in his businesses and resided in a princely house, where Queen Christina of Sweeden used to be hosted during her visits to the city. He became a leading figure in the Jewish community in Hamburg, where he died on January 6, 1666. Diogo's son Manuel Teixeira, alias Isaac Hayyim Senior Teixeira, followed his father's steps and became the financial agent and resident minister of Queen Christina of Sweden. He was the first member of the Teixeira family to settle in Amsterdam around 1698. In 1699, he was also elected "parnas" (president) of the Talmud Torah congregation.
David Teixeira was the only one of Manuel's four sons who added the name d'Andrade to his family name. The others took the name Mattos. He was born in Hamburg in 1676 and married Rachel Nunes Henriques (also born in Hamburg in 1677) in Amsterdam on February 19, 1704. David was also a merchant. He came to Amsterdam with his father and immediately integrated the Talmud Torah congregation. In 1703, David was also a "parnas" of the Amsterdam congregation. He must have moved to The Hague after this year, where he died on March 1, 1708. He and his wife Rachel were buried at the Jewish cemetery in Ouderkerk.
The following three generations of the family continued to live in The Hague. Isaac Teixeira d'Andrade was born there in 1705. On February 15, 1722, he married Rachel Israel Suasso, daughter of Baron Lopes Suasso and Rachel (alias Leonor) da Costa. He died on October 26, 1730, and his wife on January 15, 1754. Both were buried at Ouderkerk.
David Teixeira d'Andrade, Isaac's son, was born in The Hague on December 21, 1723, and he married his niece Judith (alias Catharina) Lopes Suasso on August 10, 1742. His sisters Leonora and Ester and his brothers Abraham and Benjamin also married members of the Lopes Suasso family. David died on April 11, 1796, and his wife on February 17, 1751. Both were buried at Ouderkerk.
Isaac Teixeira d'Andrade was born in The Hague in 1743. He married Ester Franco Mendes in Amsterdam on May 16, 1766. Isaac's sister, Sara, married Ester's brother, Jacob, in The Hague five years later. Isaac died in Amsterdam on September 15, 1813. His wife died on September 21, 1819. From this generation on, the Teixeira d'Andrade family remained in Amsterdam, namely the individuals whose documentation is gathered in this collection: David Teixeira d'Andrade (1767-1839, married to Rachel Franco Mendes), Abraham Teixeira d'Andrade (1806-1881, married to Rachel Beneditty) and Isaac Teixeira d'Andrade (1855-1918, married to Sophia Anna Henriques de Castro).
The last member of the Teixeira d'Andrade represented in this collection is Seline Teixeira d'Andrade (1901-1964). On December 30, 1926, she married Lambertus (Bert) Nienhuis (1873-1960), a ceramist and designer from Groningen, who was responsible for collecting the documentation related to his wife's family that composes this collection.
