Scope and content

The Archief van Jac. de Vries Jr. comprises documentation belonging to and collected by Jacob de Vries Jr., who was related to the Lopes Suasso family, a family of Jewish bankers originally from Spain with branches in Holland and England in the 17th and 18th centuries. Besides the rich information gathered on the Lopes Suasso family, this fonds also includes records related to other Sephardic families from Amsterdam, namely the Pinto and the Costa families.
The fonds is divided into five main series: 1) Correspondentie (correspondence), including personal correspondence from and addressed to Vries; 2) Stukken betreffende genealogieen (documents relating to genealogy), comprising newspaper clippings on the Lopes Suasso family, as well as typescript and handwritten annotations on its genealogy, family trees, etc.; 3) Stukken betreffende afzonderlijke families (documents relating to individual families), divided into three sub-series - Lopes Suasso, Pinto and Suasso da Costa - containing originals, copies and transcriptions of documents related to these families; 4) Varia, which gathers diverse records, including photos of headstones and portraits and a map of a tour of the Portuguese-Jewish cemetery in Ouderkerk; and 5) Stukken waarvan het verband met het archief niet is gebleken (documents whose connection to the archives has not been established), comprising various records apparently not related to the aforementioned families.
The following are some of the documents included in the fonds:
16: Copy of the deed of appointment of Antonio Lopes Suasso as Lord of Avernas le Gras in 1676.
21: Division of the estate of Jeronimo Lopes Suasso, 1752, 1759, 1762.
24: Letter from Manuel Osorio to Isaac de Jeronimo Lopes Suasso, 1798.
40: Prenuptial agreement of Moses de Aron de Pinto en Eliseba de Pinto, 1762.
44: Documents relating to the settlement of the estate of Aron de Joseph de Pinto and Sara de Pinto, 1780-1782.
45: Private deed of settlement of debts between Judith de Pinto Suasso and Moses de Aron de Pinto, and the executors of the estate of Clara de Pinto, widow of David de Joseph de Pinto, 1785.
49: Separation of the estate of Rachel de Pinto, widow of Moses de Samuel de Pinto, 1797.
66: Photocopies of estate papers of Antonio Lopes Suasso, 1685-1686.
The fonds also includes copies or originals of the wills and testaments of the following Sephardim: Abraham Israel Suasso alias Francisco Lopes Suasso, 1699-1705 (17); Eliseba de Pinto Suasso, 1744 (37); Moses de Pinto and Rachel de Pinto, 1747 (38); David de Joseph de Pinto and Clara de Pinto, 1758 (39); Rachel de Pinto, widow of Samuel Ximenes, 1780 (43); Manuel de Aron de Pinto, 1793 (47); and Ribca de Aron de Pinto, 1795 (48).
In the Amsterdam City Archives, there are other collections related to the Lopes Suasso, Pinto and Mendes da Costa families that should be consulted as well.

Archival history

The archive of Jacob De Vries Jr. results from his extensive research into the genealogy of his wife's family: Lopes Suasso, De Pinto, and Suasso da Costa. De Vries did his own research but also used the services of other genealogists, such as A.R. Kleijn. He was assisted in the research by his wife and son, also named Jacob de Vries (b. 1934). The research was conducted in archives in the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Spain, among other countries. In addition, documents originating from these family members were included in this archive.

Administrative / Biographical history

Jacob de Vries Jr. (b. 1904) was a researcher who dedicated himself to the study of the genealogy and history of the Lopes Suasso family. He was indirectly connected to this Sephardic family, since his wife, Selima Eliseba van Booven (1907-1985), was the daughter of the noblewoman Selima Lopes Suasso (1885-1970) and Hendrik Cornelis Alexander (Henri) van Booven (1877-1964).
The Suasso family was originally from Spain. António Lopes Suasso, one of its most distinguished members, arrived in Amsterdam from Bordeaux in 1635 and converted to Judaism. He lived in The Hague and was considered one of the wealthiest merchants in Holland. He was also one of the leading shareholders of the West India Company, his investments in 1674 amounting to 107,677 guldens. From 1673 onwards, António arranged loans and money transactions to King Carlos II of Spain. He was granted an estate in Brabant and elevated to Baron of Avernas-Le-Gras in the Southern Netherlands in 1676 in recognition of his services. An ardent supporter of the House of Orange, António Lopes Suasso placed 2,000,000 gulden at the disposal of William III when he set out for England in 1688. His son, Francisco Lopes Suasso, the second baron of Avernas-le-Gras, acted as the trustee for the affairs of Queen Christina of Sweden (1632–1654) in Hamburg during the years following her abdication. He married Judith, the daughter of Manuel de Teixeira de Sampaio, and his daughter married Isaac Teixeira d'Andrade. His sons were Antonio Lopes Suasso, who in 1714 married the daughter of Moses Mendes da Costa, the governor of the Bank of England, and Álvaro Lopes Suasso, a leading figure of the Spanish-Portuguese Jewish congregation of London. In 1733, he was one of the members of the committee that arranged the voyage of the first Jewish settlers to the new colony of Georgia, after getting permission from the British government. In 1735, he became a member of the Royal Society of London.
