Synopsis

Brigantine: Charlotte. Captain: William Bourk. Destination: Gibraltar. In Gibraltar, Bourk should deliver the enclosed letter and the cargo to Robert Anderson & Co., merchants in Gibraltar. Without loss of time, Bourk should go to Tetuan to invest the funds given by Robert Anderson & Co in a suitable cargo of mules, not to exceed 60 in number. "As you are not well vers'd with the nature of these beasts. I have on that account shipped in the brigantine Mr. Christopher Dyer, whose skill in horses gives me good reason to think he will be a very useful man on board". Then, Bourk should return to Gibraltar and proceed with the brigantine to Tetuan to receive the mules and make to best way to Savanna la Mar. On his arrival there, Bourk should deliver the beasts to Benjamin Wright, who will dispatch Bourk to Newport with a load of molasses. Lopez incloses another letter with directions how Bourk should manage the mules. Lopes adds that Bourk should meet with Captain John Buckley, of Lopez's brigantine Diana, at Gibraltar, and find him about buying a cargo of mules. Bourk should give him a share of the hay he has. Lopez expects that Bourk will be at Jamaica before the crop for molasses is over. "as it will be a great disappointment to me if Captain Wright is obliged to let the molasses be gone from the hands of the planters he has purchased them of, as they will not keep them to wait for you. In N.B.: Bourke is to have seven hogsheads of privilege from Jamaica to Newport and half a crown sterling per day while at Gibraltar and Jamaica. He will also have the advantage of 1,5 sixtieth parts of what proceeds of the mules delivered to Wright. His mate is also to have one half of one sixtieth part of the net proceeds of the mules sold at Jamaica.
