Synopsis
-
Sloop: Industry. Captain: Joseph Reply. Destination: New Bern, North Carolina. In New Bern, Reply should deliver the enclosed letter to Richard Ellis, merchant there, and the effects that Lopez had addressed him. "I am to acquaint you that this Gentleman having encouraged me to receive my addresses and furnish in return much of their produce as I might direct; I must hereby entreat your attention to see his engagement fulfill'd agreeable to his Promise; & you being sensible that detentions in these small voyages are no ways adequate to their profits, make no doubt that your kind regard for my interest, and the critical season for whaling soon coming about, will induce you to urge this Gentleman to attend your dispatch in case you finde there is a necessity for your so interfering." Lopez asks Reply to dispose to the best advantage of the sundries that Lopez dispatched in the sloop and invest their proceeds in beeswax, pork, tallow and corn. If the market is dulled with other cargos, Lopez prefers to Reply to trade his goods at a lower price than to take them back.
