Synopsis
-
Samuel Hart and Samuel Hart Junior address a “true copy of instructions given us by Jacob Rods. Rivera & Aaron Lopez”. Lopez and Rivera send the invoice and bill of lading for the cargo they put on board the sloop George, Peleg Green master, to Barbados. They instruct Harts to, as soon as they arrive at Barbados, apply to Jones & Mac and demand payment for three bills of exchange enclosed in the letter. If they cannot pay in cash, the amount could be taken in rum and sugars, giving preference to rum. Besides this and the neet proceed of the cargo, they should load the sloop George with rum and dispatch it immediately back to Newport. Any sugar and rum they received after loading the George should be shipped in any vessel they may be able to freight for Newport or, if not possible, to Philadelphia (addressed to Stocker & Wharton), New York (to Uriah Hendricks) or Boston (to Henry Lloyd). If they receive a great proportion in sugars, they can send them to London, consigned to Hayley & Hopkins. Instructions on the way to proceed with the accounts. Lopez and Rivera sent Harts by Captain Northam protested bills, whose payment should be demanded in Barbados.
