Synopsis
Lopez had delivered the certificate for the pig iron and sundry letters for England to Captain Hathaway. Doubts about the pig iron’s weight. Lopez explains why he had to charge the boxes containing the window glass that Brown & Co. had bought – it was a common practice to charge the packages. He also clarifies Brown & Co.’s doubts regarding the duties over the glass. He recalls that he had never acquiesced to John Brown’s proposal of his taking up only one-half of the duties. Also some doubts regarding the transaction of hardware, but Lopez is willing to keep business with Brown & Co.: “to convince you that I esteem and value an agreeable correspondence with your house, am willing to credit your account with the difference arising on the article of hardware say between 66 ⅔ and 75 per cent at which you say had them of me before”. Wool cards could not be sold under the conditions proposed by Brown & Co. Lopez asks them to send him 20 tons of pig iron by the first of the following week.
