This collection comprises genealogical and biographical documents of 18th and 19th-century American Jewish families and individuals. It includes copies of diaries, deeds, wills, marriage contracts, historical sketches, business papers, church and synagogue records, genealogies and copies of letters. A significant part of this collection also comprises annotations regarding documents, literature and correspondence from Walter Max Kraus and other genealogists.
Among the American Jewish families and individuals covered by this collection are members of Sephardic families such as the Lopez, the Mendes Seixas, the De la Motta, the Bueno de Mesquita, and the Gomez, among others. For instance, this collection includes copies of Moses Lopez's certificate of naturalisation and license to produce potash (box 11, folder 13; and box 16, folder 22), abstracts of marriage records of the Shearith Israel from 1759 to 1779 (box 13, folder 11), annotations regarding John Charles de Lucena (box 11, folder 15) or the origins of the Seixas family (box 14, folders 21-22), and copies of the wills of Abraham de Lucena (box 16, folder 5) and Abraham Mendes Seixas (box 16, folder 35).

Administrative / Biographical history

Walter Max Kraus (1889-1944) was an American neurologist and psychiatrist. He studied at Harvard University and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and taught neurology at Cornell Medical School. Genealogy was another interest of Kraus, who collected numerous annotations, documents and bibliographic material regarding early American Jewish families.
