Scope and content

This fonds comprises papers concerning the Tobias and other related families, such as the Mordecai and the Lazarus. The Tobias was a Jewish family of Sephardic extraction based in Charleston, South Carolina.
The collection is arranged into seven series: 1) Tobias Family Papers; 2) Family Bibles; 3) Mordecai Family Papers; 4) Lazarus Family; 5) Papers on/of individuals. Family/research of TJ Tobias; 6) History and Research Papers; and 7) Miscellaneous.
Series 5 includes numerous documents and research notes on influential Sephardic families and individuals settled in South Carolina and other places in North America, such as Isaac da Costa, Moses Lindo, David Lopez, Moses Lopez, Samuel Nunez, Abraham Rodriguez Rivera, Joseph Salvador, and De Leon/De Lyon and Lopez families. This series also contains Benjamin and Levi Sheftall's diary with information regarding the early Jewish settlement in Savannah, Georgia. Series 6 includes the history and research papers of Thomas J. Tobias regarding the Sephardic congregation of Charleston and Francis Salvador, as well as typed copies of wills of South Carolina Jews from circa 1750 to 1860.
