Scope and content

This collection contains correspondence, indentures, wills, deeds, naturalisation certificates, and financial records related to the Solomons and other Jewish families, together with papers and materials of Lucius Solomons, a San Francisco lawyer. Among these records, there are original documents and copies related to the Mendes Seixas family, in particular concerning the administration of the inheritance of Abraham Mendes Seixas, a Portuguese merchant settled in London, deceased in 1738, who was the father of Isaac Mendes Seixas and grandfather of Gershom Mendes Seixas. These documents are the following:
Folder 14: Case concerning the will of Abraham Mendes Seixas, 1750.
Folder 21: Copy of an extract of Rebecca Mendes Seixas’s will related to her brother Isaac Mendes Seixas and the administration of her late father’s estate. It includes the original document and a photostatic copy.
Folder 22: Letter of Grace Nathan to her brother Moses Seixas, including a copy of the extract mentioned above of Rebecca Mendes Seixas’ will. It includes the original document and a photostatic copy.
Folder 23: Account of the estate of Abraham Mendes Seixas. It includes the original document and a photostatic copy.
Folder 25: Letters from Rebecca Mendes Seixas to her brother Isaac Mendes Seixas, including originals and English translations: London, March 1, 1764; June 13, 1766; February 12, 1767; March 4, 1767; March 16, 1767; February 12, 1769; May 11, 1769; May 25, 1772; Kingston, July 26, 1779. Folder 26 contains duplicates of these letters.
Some of these documents were published in volume 27 of the Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society (1920).
This collection also contains a copy of Moses Lopez’s Lunar Calendar of the Festivals, and other Days in the Year, Observed by the Israelites, commencing Anno Mundi, 5566, and ending in 5619 (Newport: Office of the Newport Mercury, 1806). This copy (folder 4) belonged to Catharina Manuel (1758-1861), wife of Levy Solomons, and the flyleaves and end sheets contain handwritten genealogical notes on her descendants and an annotation on the death of her husband.
