Synopsis

Original and copies.
Mayne & Co. enclose the account sales of Lopez's goods per the Eagle and the Venus. They explain the constraints that the Act of Parliament provoke in the trade with American ports and how it affects Lopez's trade. The Venus was embarged at Barcelona to carry troops to the Coast of Africa. Mayne & Co. instructed Captain Story to take information on the situation in the ports of Barbary. Such information will determine the decision about the route taken by the Venus. They acknowledge Lopez of a letter received from Thomas Lothrop from Brazil. They wish success to Lopez's whaling enterprises in the South Seas. They share information regarding the prices of American products and the Venus' insurance.

Newport Mr. Aaron Lopes
Lisbon 10th June 1775
Sir
We had the pleasure to pay you our last respects the 15th expired, when handed you the follows account sales that of your Indian corn per the Eagle neating Rs. 198$552, of beans &c. per the Venus, your 1/3 producing Rs. 155$464, of staves per the Venus your 1/3 producing Rs. 24$982 to your credit in account current which begd the note in our conformity, all which and what further wrote you hereby confirm.
We have since received your esteemed favor 15th February & duly note its contents omitting to reply wherein we are understood. We observe what you mention that a cargoe wheat might be procured cheaper with you than in Pensilvania but as by the late measures taken by the British Parliament your trade will be restrained we durst not venture to send Captain Story to your parts until all differences are settled tho your advice will serve for our Government in future.
Your inclosed letter for said Commander has been forwarded to him to Cadiz where hope it will find him safe. You’ll have seen by our aforesaid last that the Venus had been embargoed at Barcelona in the King of Spain’s service to carry troops to the Coast of Africa (supposed some where in the State of Algiers) on occasion of a great expedition his Catholick Majesty has lately made against those Barbarians, altho the time of the service is not fined Captain Story expected to be descharged after having landed the troops and would then proceed to Cadiz with some Stones &c. he also loaded in the Kings account. We have lodged letters for Captain Story at Cadiz to take informations what passes in all the Ports of Barbary in the Corn Branch and if anything can be done that way with a view of leaving some benefit to proceed thither, on the contrary to goe direct either to Quebec or New York (as wind and weather may favor) for a cargoe wheat &.ª as those two Provinces are exempted from the Act of Parliament and Trade there left free, on his return he is to call off our bard for intelligence of markets, the result of all which you’ll be apprized in course.
We lately received a letter from Captain Lothrop dated in December last from Rio Janeiro, wherein he acquaints us he was detained there by the Portuguese Governor, who wanted him to show the Portugueze the way to the whale fishery which he was not inclined to do, we transmitt this letter as we have done with the formers to your friends in England, that they may act in this affair, as they think proper, being of too delicate a nature for us to stir in. We inclosed had you an abstract of your account with us up to this day, which pray examine and let us know if the same is conform with your books, we have not credited you therein for your share if nett proceeds of the last cargoe what per the Venus sold at Barcelona, as Captain Story has not transmitted us all the account relating thereto, altho we mentioned in our letter of 20 January last by mistake that had debited your Rs 30$360 for amount of insurance on the Venus and her cargoe from hence to London, you’ll find that we have carried only ½ of that sum to your debit in account current, the other half being on our account. We have likewise debited you agreeable to your desire Rs. 1$212 for 6/8d. Mr Edward Mayne of London has paid too much to your friends in London.
We observe you have engaged in the whale fishery in the South Seas and wish you much success in your entreprizes. The prices of American products have not yet started at our market and rule as noted at foot, but we think they soon must take favor, as further imports will become precarious besides which it is reported the harvest in the Kingdom and Spain will turn out indifferent and in France there is actually a pressing want for grain, you’ll shall be informed of any material alterations that may take place here.
With much ado we have affected the insurance here on the Venus present voyage until arrived at Cadiz at 1% per month for 2 months certain and to pay additional premium at that rate for the time she may be out after that term, and in case of lors the underwriters to pay 98 % this being the cheapest terms we could obtain inclosed you have the account your share amounts to Rs. 28$267 for which have debited you and pray your noting it in our conformity. You’ll observe that in case the Venus is taken or destroyed by the Moors, the King of Spain is to pay one half of her value, which will be in our favor, at least Captain Story has wrote us to that purpose. We do not recollect for your further detention and remain always truly Sir your most obedient humble servants
