Sir
By favor of Mr James Thompson, I take upon me to write to you, knowing you to be a Gentleman of character and engagd largely in trade, therefore I make application, in hopes of meeting some encouragement under you, in the mercantile way, in which I have been brought up, and in public offices from my youth. I would make mention of a letter, I had to you, from a merchant of New York, about six years ago, as a recommendation for the same purpose, but unlucky for me, you had then sufficient assistance, since that time, I have been chiefly in Boston, and the West Indies; but not meeting in the former place that encouragement I expected, and in the latter not enjoying good health, I lately return’d here in a sloop commanded by Joshua Blevin from Jamaica. I leave the principal points as to my character, and understanding in business, to the Gentleman who hands you this; and if a more particular account of what I may merit in those respects, in your esteem as a Merchant be requird, I can satisfy you; and if employ’d as a clerk (I hope) you’ll have no reason to regret showing me favor. I am with respect. Sir,
Your most humble servant
William Strong
