Scope and content

The Thomas Addis Emmet Collection consists of manuscripts relating chiefly to the period before, during, and following the American Revolution. The manuscripts are arranged in 28 topics, most of them milestones in early American history. Highlights of the Emmet Collection include Thomas Jefferson's manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence, an engrossed copy of the Bill of Rights, and manuscript minutes of the Annapolis Convention.
This collection includes a petition presented by the citizens of Charleston to General Lincoln on May 10, 1780, for the surrender of the patriot efforts after the advancement of the British troops in the city. Among the signers were Joseph da Costa, Joseph de Palacios, and David Sarzedas, among other Jews of Charleston (EM. 7626).

Archival history

This collection represents a holding that is part of an even more extensive collection of some 30,000 items assembled by Dr Thomas Addis Emmet over 50 years and donated to the Library in 1896 by trustee John Stewart Kennedy. Other portions of the Emmet Collection are visual items in the Print Collection of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs, and Maps in The Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division.

Administrative / Biographical history

Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919) developed a passionate interest in American history after a boyhood visit to Philadelphia, when he first saw the original Declaration of Independence and went on to collect, for some fifty years, drawings, engravings, maps, and manuscripts relating to the American Revolution and the early history of the United States.
