Synopsis
-
David forwarded by Cap. Hathaway the 3 casks of dry goods that Lopez had ordered. The enemy still continues their preparations to evacuate the island. He heard that Captain John Andrew, in a brigantine from New York, bound to Newport and, among the passengers, were Captain Mandsby and Sam Goldthwait. On Monday noon, David Lopez added to this letter that an express had arrived from General Washington, confirming the capture of the British garrison at Beauford with Sir James Wallace and his fleet by the Count De Estaing. They had taken prisoners 700 British with 200 tories and slaves, 13 transports, 1 ship of 50 guns and several frigates.
