The Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft (Hamburg Parliament) fonds comprises documentation produced by this governing institution of Hamburg. The collection is divided into three types of documents. The first type is the so-called "Acta Conventuum Senatus et Civium", which consists of 69 archival units containing information on the decision-making processes of the Bürgerschaft in articulation with the Rat (city council). These documents were severely destroyed in a fire in 1842 and later reconstructed through copies from other archives. The second type of documents is the "Register" (1410-1800), consisting of two units with information on internal decisions taken by the Bürgerschaft. The third is the "Aufstellung über alle Sitzungen" (List of all meetings), which records all meetings of the Bürgerschaft from 1603 to 1849, including the number of participants in each meeting, the presiding officers, decisions taken, etc.
Volume 7 of the "Acta Conventuum" includes information regarding the negotiation of the contract of residence of the Portuguese Jewish community with the local authorities in Hamburg in 1697 (121-1_1 Band 7, fol. 297). These negotiations began in a context of economic crisis, as the Senat (Senate) and the Bürgerschaft had the intention of raising taxes on the community.
One document of this collection was included in the platform "Key Documents for German-Jewish History" of the Institute for the History of the German Jews:
121-1_1 Band 2, Acta Conventuum Senatus et Civium (Verhandlungen zwischen Rat und Bürgerschaft) mit Register, 21 fols., December 9, 1603: A complaint of the Hamburg Parliament concerning Portuguese Jews, demanding the expulsion of those who said to be Christians but secretly practised the Jewish religion.

The Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft did not keep its own documentation. It was usually handled by the Oberaltenkollegium (College of Elders). The Acta Conventuum Senatus et Civium series, containing the negotiations between the Rat (city council) and the Bürgerschaft was destroyed in the fire that hit the Hamburg State Archives in 1842. It was later reconstructed from copies of other archive collections.
After the 1842 fire, the surviving documentation of the Hamburg State Archive was removed to rooms in today's Town Hall. Although this new location soon became too small for the increasing number of materials, it was only in 1972 that the archive was transferred to a new building on ABC-Strasse. Since 1997, the Hamburg State Archive has been located in a building at Kattunbleiche designed by the architect Jan Störmer. At present, the archive contains over 30,000 metres of documents related to the city administration of Hamburg, as well as from major private institutions and individuals in the city.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The first document evidence on the Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft (Hamburg Parliament) dates back to 1483. Since the 16th century, together with the Rat (city council), it was responsible for the government of Hamburg, although, in practice, the power balance was shifted in favour of the Rat. The members of the Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft could only be those who, in addition to citizenship, also owned real estate and assets.
The Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft was dissolved on November 24, 1859, and replaced by the first elected Bürgerschaft (Parliament).
