Scope and content
-
The Quartier de Bayonne fonds comprises very diverse documentation related to the local administration of Bayonne and maritime and trade affairs. It includes correspondence of the service of the navy of Bayonne produced by different officials, documentation on maritime activity in the region, and inspections and actions of control by the navy in Bayonne (1791-1910). It contains extensive information on the local population and merchant ships in local ports.
Since several members of the Jewish community of Bayonne operated in Atlantic trade and some were owners of trade ships, this fonds contains interesting information on the economic activity of the "nação portuguesa" (Portuguese nation, i.e. Portuguese Jewish community) of Bayonne. It is the case, for instance, of a record on the ship Le Requin bought by David Silvera, a Portuguese Jew, around 1757. The ship had been built in England, weighed 70 tons, and was armed with eight guns, twelve swivel guns, and 50 pistols. The crew numbered 73 men and it was captained by Jacques Mora (13P25, numéro d'armement 23, fol. 1).

Archival history
-
From the 17th to the 20th century, sailors of fishing and commercial ships were required to serve periodically on ships of war. For this reason, they are included in the military archives documentation. In 1952, this system was abolished. The Etablissement National des Invalides de la Marine (National Institution for Invalids of the Navy) (ENIM) continued then to monitor the careers of sailors and centralised the corresponding archives.

Access, restrictions
-
A certain number of registers of correspondence are in poor condition and cannot be consulted. The edges of certain collections of rolls crumble when they are consulted, which makes their consultation difficult, sometimes even impossible.
