Scope and content

This fonds comprises documentation on Gabriel de Silva (ca. 1683–1763), a Portuguese Jewish banker and syndic of the Portuguese nation in Bordeaux. The fonds is divided into three major collections: General correspondence, Accounting, and Miscellaneous. The collection includes extensive correspondence with merchants and agents in numerous cities where Silva was particularly active, such as Amsterdam, Antwerp, Curaçao, Bayonne, Bordeaux, Bremen, Brussels, Cadiz, Frankfurt, Granada, Hamburg, London, Madrid, Paris, Toulouse, Versailles, among many other places. The Accounting documentation includes receipts, invoices, bills of exchange, and other related documents. As a result of Silva's role as the syndic of the Portuguese nation of Bordeaux, this collection also includes numerous documents regarding the Sephardic community settled in this city. For instance, it is the case of a document (7 B 2173) concerning the Confrérie des Pauvres Malades (Brotherhood of the Poor and Sick), which includes the list of its members, among them Ishac Henriques de Castro (alias Gabriel (or Georges) Henriques de Castro), Samuel Gomez-Talavera (alias Samuel Talavera), Yoseph Gomez, Joseph Gomez, Moseh Rodriguez-Silva, Fernando (or Antoine) Rodrigue-Silva, Moseh Lopez-Ferreira, Manuel Lopez Pereyra, Abraham Carvallo, François Carbaille, Yahacob (or Antoine) Henriquez de Castro, and the former syndic Yacob de Castro.

Archival history

The Gabriel da Silva collection is part of the Négociants (traders) fonds. This documentation came from multiple origins. Recently, these records, which were scattered and mixed up, were reorganised and catalogued. A topographical classification was adopted, creating conditions for the collection to provide researchers with new insights into the development of trade in France.
