This fonds comprises documentation collected by Jean-Léon Cardozo de Béthencourt (1861-1938) as part of his scholarly work on local history, genealogy and the history of Judaism in France. For this reason, Béthencourt's manuscript notes contain relevant information on Sephardic families living in Bordeaux and Amsterdam. The fonds includes annotations, abstracts and transcriptions of primary sources.

Jean-Léon Cardozo de Béthencourt was born in Nantes on December 15, 1861. He was the librarian of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Lisbon Academy of Sciences) before moving to Bordeaux, where he became interested in local history. He was a great scholar, bibliophile, genealogist, and Hebraist, whose research work on the Jewish community of Bordeaux was published in the Revue historique de Bordeaux and the Revue des études juives. He died in Bordeaux on December 7, 1938.
