Scope and content
-
This fonds comprises records of the parish of Saint Katherine Cree, Leadenhall Street, City of London including parish registers (baptisms, marriages, burials, banns); vestry minutes; financial accounts; administrative papers; papers relating to parish poor relief; poor rate and tithe rate assessments, deeds and rentals of parish properties.
The building that served as the first synagogue in London after the resettlement was placed in Creechurch Lane, in the parish of Saint Katherine Cree. Therefore, this fonds contains valuable information on the early times of the Jewish community of London and its background. Samuel (1921) published abstracts and transcriptions of documents regarding the settlement of the first London synagogue, including records from this fonds, as the following:
P69/KAT2/B/007/MS01198/001: Churchwardens' Account Book, 1650-1691, which includes mentions of Portuguese and Spanish conversos and Jews before and after the resettlement (1656) living in the parish of Saint Katherine.
P69/KAT2/D/003/MS01213: Title deeds and expired leases relating to parish property, 1612-1777, including two brick messuages in Creechurch Lane, Aldgate, acquired (1657) as a charity trust by the parish of St. Katherine Cree and by them permitted to be used as a synagogue.
P69/KAT2/B/001/MS01196/001: Vestry minute book, 1639 - 1718, including references to early members of the Jewish community.
P69/KAT2/B/040/MS01204/001: Workhouse Committee: minute book, 1738-1795, containing information on the fate of the building after the synagogue was transferred to Bevis Marks.
The Bevis Marks synagogue was also located in the parish of Saint Katherine Cree, and further information regarding this synagogue and the Sephardic community can be found in this fonds.

Archival history

The records have been acquired by Guildhall Manuscripts on various dates. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section was merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
Saint Katherine Cree was constructed by the Prior of Holy Trinity Aldgate so that the parishioners would not disturb the canons in their church. "Cree" is thought to be a corruption or contraction of "Christchurch". The church escaped serious damage during both the 1666 Great Fire and World War II. The church is now used as a Guild Church.
The parish of Saint Andrew Undershaft was united with Saint Mary Axe in 1561. In 1954, the parish was united with the parishes of Saint Katherine Cree and Saint James Duke's Place, which had been united in 1873.
