Scope and content

This section of the Additional Manuscripts comprises original correspondence, letter books and an account book of George Oxenden (1620-1669), President of the East India Company at Surat from 1662 to 1669, and 1st Governor of Bombay under the East India Company in 1668-9. The papers are mainly of official or business nature. Still, there is a certain amount of private correspondence with his family and friends. Some of the originals of the letters are among the papers at the India Office. The correspondents include several Portuguese merchants, most of them conversos and Jews settled in London, such as Jorge Francia, Domingos Rodrigues, Duarte da Silva, Samuel da Veiga, Álvaro da Costa, Francisco Liz, Fernão Mendes, Afonso Rodrigues and Gomes Rodrigues.

Administrative / Biographical history

George Oxenden (1620-1699) was governor of the fort and island of Bombay. Son of Sir James Oxenden of Dene, Kent, George Oxenden spent his youth in India, and in 1661 was knighted at Whitehall. On March 19, 1662, Oxenden was appointed to the post of president and chief director of all their affairs at Surat and all other British factories in Northern India. After Charles II ceded Bombay to the East India Company in March 1667, Oxeden was commissioned to take possession of the island. In August following, the court of directors appointed him governor and commander-in-chief of Bombay. On September 21, 1667, the island was formally ceded by the royal troops to the new governor. Oxeden died at Surat on July 14, 1669.
