Scope and content
This section of the Additional Manuscripts collection is composed of correspondence, memoranda, official records, diplomatic papers, accounting records, court books, legal documents and family papers gathered by Walter John Pelham, 4th Earl of Chichester. The bulk of these miscellaneous records dates from the 18th century. They include records produced by or related to Sephardic Jews from London. Some examples are the following:

Archival history
The volumes of this section of the Additional Manuscripts were presented by Walter John Pelham, 4th Earl of Chichester to the British Museum in 1886 and 1887.
Administrative / Biographical history
Walter John Pelham, 4th Earl of Chichester (1838-1902) was a British Liberal politician. The eldest son of Henry Pelham, 3rd Earl of Chichester, he took his degree at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1859. Lord Pelham was elected to the House of Commons for Lewes in 1865. His tenure lasted until 1874. Pelham was also Alderman for East Sussex, deputy lieutenant of Sussex and Kent, and Presidente of Brighton College. He died on May 28, 1902, and was buried in Stanmer churchyard. His younger brother Reverend Francis Pelham (1844-1905) succeeded him as the 5th Earl of Chichester.
