Scope and content

This collection contains copies of documents on Jews in the Netherlands and Belgium gathered by Isak Haim Prins. It includes historical documents regarding the Prins family and Belgian Jews, including a vast collection of articles on the persecution of New Christians, as well as newspaper clippings and countless notes written by Prins.
The following are some examples of materials relating to the Sephardic Diaspora included in the collection:
36b: Excerpt from Jacob Tirado's synagogue prayer book in Amsterdam. 1608.
40 b-d: Contains newspaper clippings, articles, notes, and excerpts from the Archives générales du Royaume (National Archives of Belgium) about New Christian physicians in the Netherlands, namely Louis Fernandez Paramo and Francisco Lopez Fernandez.
41 a-c: Contains newspaper clippings, articles, notes, and manuscript excerpts from the Archives de l'État à Anvers (State Archives in Antwerp) regarding New Christian and Jewish suppliers to the army in the Netherlands, with references to Jozua Castaño, Emanuel Telles d'Acosta, Diego Gomez Silveyra, Pedro Alvarez de Luna, Joseph Cortissas, Juda Senior Henriques, Moses Nunes, Solomon Medina, Manuel De Lima, Isaac Lorenzo, Salvador & Lopez, Del Castillo, De Castro & Gonçales, Machado & Pereira, and De Arredondo de los Rios.
45: Contains newspaper clippings, notes, and excerpts from various archives (including Amsterdam, Leiden, and Antwerp) regarding business and trade, as well as family relations of the Marranos in Antwerp.

370: Manuscript lists of baptised Jews from the Netherlands.

Archival history

The CAHJP holds papers of numerous international, national and local organizations and over 300 private collections from the 16th to the 20th centuries from all over the world. It contains about 6,000 linear metres of documents, records and files (60,000,000 pages of documentation); 1,600 archives of communities, organizations and individuals; 18,000,000 frames of microfilmed documents; 2000 lists and inventories of documents and files concerning Jews, held in other archives; 15,000 photographs of Jewish personalities and sites; 8,000 printed statutes, reports, leaflets, posters and handbills; 1,200,000 newspaper clippings on various subjects; 15,000 books and publications on Jewish history.

Administrative / Biographical history

Isak Haim Prins was born in Dinxperlo on February 24, 1887. He was the youngest child of Maurits Prins and Martha (Frederika) Kalisch. His son, Ralph, was born in 1926. In 1948, Prins emigrated to Israel and died in Jerusalem ten years later, on March 9, 1968. He was a Master of Law, historian, and publicist. His legacy includes publications on the Marranos in the Netherlands, Jews and chocolate, and Jews in the Netherlands and Belgium, among others.
