Scope and content

The documentary fonds of the Municipal Archive of Villalon de Campos contains documentation dated mid-13th to 20th centuries. This collection is based on the medieval documentation preserved in the archive, namely documents related to the government of the town, such as the town council minutes, account books, lawsuits, and local citizenship notebooks.
Concerning Jews, the information is mainly contained in the "Cuadernos de Minutas de Avecindamiento" (Local Citizenship Notebooks) and in the "Actas del concejo” (Town Council Minutes). These series provide information concerning the Jews of Villalon, such as their professional occupations (weavers, shoemakers, silversmiths, and doctors), tax farming, etc.
Lawsuits: Dispute between Yuçaf Aben Yanto, tax-collector, and the town council of Villalon (1432).
”Cuadernos de Minutas de Avecindamiento” (Local Citizenship Notebooks): these contain information about Jews who resided in Villalon since 1473. The town council granted some of them tax privileges, such as Ysaque Rofos, who arrived in 1479 and was exempted from paying municipal tax charges for ten years. In other cases, it was necessary for new citizens to provide a guarantor. Some Hebrew signatures are preserved.
Town Council Minutes (1436-1487 and 1481-1499): it contains requests submitted by the Jewish Aljama of Villalon. For example, Rabbi Salamon Çalama requested from the town council a license to introduce kosher wine for Passover (1482). Local citizenship records are also kept within the minutes.
