Scope and content
The parchment collection of the Cathedral Archive of Avila contains 300 files in parchment. The oldest one is a papal bull dated 1138. The vast majority of the documents are from the 13th and 14th centuries. There are several papal bulls, some are decorated, and some of them still have lead or wax seals. The parchments related to the relations between the cathedral chapter and the large population of Jews in Avila are around 50, and they are from the Late Middle Ages.
Concerning Jews, rentals of the Dean and the cathedral chapter property by the Jews are preserved. There is both personal information about Jews and references to the location of the synagogues and Jewish butcher shop and that the Jews of Avila mainly lived in the areas Brieva, Covaleda, Yuradero, and San Vicente.
