Scope and content
The José Hygino collection comprises copies of documents extracted from the Dutch West India Company (WIC) fonds that José Hygino Duarte Pereira produced. Hygino made these copies following a mission funded by the local Assembleia Provincial (Provincial Assembly) in 1886.
The collection contains the "Dageliksche Notulen der Hooge Raden in Brazilie" (Daily notices from the High Council of Recife), which is one of the most important sources of information on the urban and social life in Recife during the Dutch occupation when the city hosted an important Sephardic community.
