This collection contains professional correspondence and legal documents reflecting the careers of the two John Lowells, father and son. It includes depositions, testimonies and memoranda from legal cases; reports and petitions of congresses; and deeds, contracts, wills, accounts, receipts, and promissory notes. The collection also contains correspondence from other family members.
Among the court records included in this collection is a testimony presented by Abraham Touro before the Massachusetts District Court in June 1772 concerning a case involving a trading ship from London, the Charlotte, Captain Mackay (box 8, no. 675). A digital copy is available online:

John Lowell (1743-1802) was a Massachusetts lawyer and judge. He received his BA from Harvard College in 1760 and served in the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783. His son, John Lowell (1769-1840), was a Massachusetts lawyer, agriculturist, philanthropist, and Federalist pamphlet writer. He received his BA from Harvard College in 1786.
