Scope and content: This collection comprises materials collected by the Italian historian Salvatore Foà (1885-1962). It contains texts and notes from various sources relating to Italy's French and Restoration periods, texts concerning the activity of the Jewish guilds, texts and records concerning the Jews of Majorca residing in Villafranca Piedmonte, lists and biographies of Italian Jewish patriots and fighters in the Risorgimento, copies of 18th-century texts from the Archives of the Jewish Community of Turin, notes and copies of documents dating from the 16th to the 18th century from various sources regarding Jews in Piedmont, and also Foa's essays on Jews in Piedmont from the 16th to the 18th century.
Administrative / Biographical history: Salvatore Foà was born in Turin, Italy, in 1885. He was a literature teacher at the Liceo Ginnasio Massimo D'Azeglio high school until 1938 and then at the Jewish school in Turin. After World War II, he taught at the Manzoni middle school and then again at the Jewish school. In addition to his career as a teacher, Foà worked as a historian and researcher, leaving numerous publications on Jewish matters. Salvatore Foà passed away in 1962.; (source: CDEC Digital Library)
